MYE 5007E - Percussion History and Orchestration Techniques

Course Objectives

1. To provide students with a solid understanding of the properties of the instruments in the percussion family,
2. To help students develop an understanding of the unique nature of percussion performance and its physcal relationship to the written score,
3. Through focused listening to selected examples to help students gain critical listening skills and and understanding of the application of percussion instruments in Western music,
4. To guide students through composition to deal with abstract approaches to notation,

Course Description

A detailed look at the technical issues involved in writing and scoring for percussion in the western classical music tradition, the historical development of percussion literature, and the role of percussion instruments in western culture prior to its inclusion in classical European music; composition of original works for percussion,
