Course Objectives

1. to oversee scientific and technological developments in the Middle East during the 19th and 20th centuries,
2. to examine science and technology-focused lessons in the curricula of schools opened by missionaries coming from Europe and the USA,
3. to give examples of the activities of missionaries on the fields of medicine, education, anthropology, history, archeology, museology, sociology, etc.
4. to deal with the scientific and technological developments in the Middle East during the 19th and 20th centuries with an interdisciplinary approach in the context of the East-West interaction in the historical process,
5. to increase the capacity to conduct research, write a report and present a presentation on the history of the Middle East.

Course Description

In this course, the missionary activities that took place in the 19th and 20th centuries in the Middle East will be discussed in the context of science and technology. Science and technology related courses in the curriculum of the missionary schools will be examined as well as activities carried out by Western missionaries on science, technology, archeology, medicine, history, anthropology, education, museology, etc. In the course, the people in the Middle East, missionary activities, science and technology relation will be examined in detail.
