Dersin Amaçları

The course aims to give a general understanding of statistical physics and ther-
modynamics. The concept of entropy and its connection to the probability distribution will be covered
systematically starting from the classical ideal gas, and then generalizing to systems with interactions.
The knowledge acquired in the first part will permit to understand the postulates of thermodynamics,
and from there develop the thermodynamic theory. The second part of the lecture will focus on statistical
mechanics, the canonical, and grand canonical ensembles will be studied in depth both for classical and
quantum systems. Finally Maxwell-Boltzmann, Bose and Fermi statistics will be covered and will be
applied to problems such as the specific heat of metals and the black body radiation.
