CEV 104E - Yer Bilimi

Dersin Amaçları

• Define the fundamental components of the Earth system (lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere) and explain the interactions between them,
• Understand the basic structure, composition and dynamics of the Earth (plate tectonics, rock formation, morphological processes, etc.),
• Explain the hydrological cycle, the behaviour of surface water and groundwater systems, and their importance in terms of water resources and environmental management,
• Identify basic natural resources (water, minerals, energy sources) and discuss the environmental impacts and sustainability issues associated with their use,
• Evaluate how earth processes create natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and landslides, and what this means for infrastructure planning and risk mitigation efforts,
• Apply basic geological/hydrological information related to environmental engineering by interpreting simple maps, cross-sections, and data sets.

Dersin Tanımı

This course is an introductory-level course that examines the fundamental components and processes of the Earth System, particularly from the perspective of environmental engineering applications. Students will examine the structure and composition of the Earth, the dynamics of the lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere, and how these subsystems shape the natural environment.
The course evaluates water resources, groundwater systems, soils, climate, natural hazards, and natural resources from an environmental engineering perspective. It discusses how Earth processes control water, energy, and material cycles, and the effects of these processes on environmental quality, pollutant transport, and sustainable engineering design. The aim is to establish a solid foundation for advanced environmental engineering courses by introducing fundamental concepts related to environmental geology, groundwater contamination, climate change, and natural disaster risk.
