Course Objectives To introduce the basic concepts, methods, tools of the astronomy and to introduce the properties, formations, evolutions of the celestial objects (asteroids, comets, planets, natural satellites, stars, galaxies and the universe as a whole) to the Astronautical Engineering students who will design systems to study them.
Course Description Brief history of the Astronomy. Time and length scales. Coordinate frames. Gravitational interaction of the celestial bodies. Properties of the Electromagnetic Radiation. Observation methods and tools. Earth-Moon system. Planets. Asteroids and comets. The Sun. Evolution of the stars. Exoplanets. Galaxy and galaxy groups. Cosmology.
Course Outcomes Students who pass the course will gain the basic knowledge about
1) The brief history of the astronomy,length and time scales, coordinate frames,
2) The gravitational attraction and motion laws, electromagnetic radiation,
3) The methods and tools used in the astronomy,
4) The constituents of the solar system; stars, exoplanets and galaxies
5) The cosmology and observation methods without using photons.
