UZB 386E - Boundary Layer Theory
Course Objectives
1. To develop an understanding for viscous boundary layer flows
2. To get a knowledge about laminar boundary layers, their equations, and to utilize their exact solutions, and their analysis methods
3. Understanding the transition to turbulence and its practical applications
4. To analyze turbulent boundary layers using mathematical methods
5. To understand how to treat compressible boundary layers, boundary layer separation, and control
Course Description
The course represents a comprehensive overview of boundary-layer theory and its application to all areas of fluid mechanics, with particular emphasis on the flow past bodies such as aircraft aerodynamics. Generally, the course will start with an introduction to Boundary Layers followed by the presentation of boundary layer equations. The subsequent sections will cover incompressible laminar boundary layers, pressure gradient effects, integral methods, while transition to turbulent flow will be another part. Basic concepts of turbulent flow, turbulent boundary layer calculation methods, compressible boundary layers as well as separation and boundary layer control will be taught.
