Course Objectives
Introduction to Gas Turbine/Aircraft Engine Fundamentals; Aircraft Engine Types and Applications, Industrial Gas Turbine Applications, Thermodynamic Cycles, Aircraft Engine (AE) Performance, Thrust, Propulsion and Thermal efficiency, Static structures and Secondary flow of the Engine, Gas Turbine (GT)/Aircraft Engine (AE) Components; Compressors, Combustors and Turbines, Thermal Effects, Compressor Stall and Surge Mechanical Systems; AE Bearings, Seals, Shaft design and Gearbox, Accessory Systems: Start system, Fuel system, Lubrication system, Whole Engine design, Aircraft integration.
Course Description
Engine design parameters, Compressor, Combustor and Turbine design principles, critical parameters, Gas Turbine Components, Engine secondary flow system and cooling requirement, Mechanical Systems; Shaft, Seals, Bearings and Sumps, Jet Engine Materials, Accessories; Starting System, Gearbox, Lubrication and Fuel Systems and Entire Engine Design, Stall and Surge
Course Outcomes
1. Be able to choose the engine cycle
2. Be able to design compressor, combustor and turbine
3. Be able to design compressor and turbine blades
4. Be able to design main flow, static components, secondary flow and cooling needs
5. Be able to design Engine Mechanic Systems; Shaft, bearings, seal designs
6. Be able to design Engine Sub Systems; Gearbox, fuel and oil systems
7. Be able to understand the engine materials, details of its components
8. Be able to design the inlet duct and design the exhaust nozzle
9. Be able to understand the engine integration into the aircraft
