Course Objectives
1. To train students in writing mass and energy balances.
2. To train students in representing problems by flowsheets showing input/output streams and other necessary information.
3. To provide knowledge on chemical processes.
4. To provide experience in the use of computer software in problem solving.
Course Description
Material balances in processes and operations. Single-phase and multiphase systems. The P-V-T characteristics of gases and vapor-gas mixtures. Energy balances in processes and operations. Simultaneous solution of material and energy balances.
Course Outcomes
1. Write material and energy balance equations for simple physical and chemical processes, including recycle, multiple-step and bypass systems.
2. Determine the physical and chemical properties of overall stream flows and stream components by using gas laws, reaction stoichiometry and vapor-liquid equilibrium equations.
3. Apply energy and material balances to specialized processes, such as adiabatic humidification, mixing.
4. Use computer techniques in problem solving.
