Course Objectives
1. Teaching the chemical and physical basic information that is essential for Materials Science
2. To raise awareness of the importance of Materials Science for engineering applications.
3. To teach the properties, structures and production processes of materials and to teach the student the close relationship between them
4. To give material design knowledge to the student by using material selection and material science knowledge.
Course Description
Introduction to materials science, importance and basic definitions of materials engineering, historical view of materials engineering, classification of materials, classification of atomic structures of materials. Crystal structures and defects. Mechanical and physical properties of engineering materials. Solid-state diffusion. Mechanical properties. Strength-enhancing mechanisms. Phase diagrams and solidification. Ferrous and non-ferrous alloys and heat treatment. Electrical, optical, thermal and magnetic properties associated with electron bond structures of materials. Prevention of corrosion and metallic corrosion.
