Course Objectives
1. Develop professional skills in the design of chemical processes involving a variety of unit operations (absorption/stripping, distillation, extraction, adsorption, crystallization, chemical conversions, etc)
2. Provide experiences in problem solving approaches [define the problem; define existing data and additional information needed; obtain/measure the needed information; define the techniques to solve the problem and select the best approach to obtain a good (timely, adequate accuracy, and cost effective) solution.
3. Provide knowledge to select/size/ design major equipment common to most chemical processes
4. Provide training and experiences in the use of a process simulation software (ChemCAD)
5. Provide training and experiences in report writing, oral presentations and teamwork.
Course Description
Principles of chemical engineering design. Process flow diagrams. Engineering standards and realistic constraints. Selection, sizing/design of individual chemical process equipment such as pumps, exchangers, columns, drums, surge tanks. Design of a complete chemical process/product.
Course Outcomes
Students who pass the course are expected to be able to:
1. define the approach and solve process design problems
2. understand typical process development steps, construct block/process flow diagrams and material and energy balances of a process
3. critically review design alternatives
4. select and size appropriate process equipment
5. search technical literature to obtain relevant background information and appropriate data for solving design problems
6. carry out process simulation using ChemCAD
7. develop an appreciation for process safety, and environmental control issues
8. work effectively as design team members; prepare effective technical reports and give effective oral presentations
