Course Coordinator Mustafa Hulusi Özkul
Course Objectives 1 - To give an understanding on the importance of materials science for engineering applications
2 - To teach the properties and structure of materials and to make the students understand the strong relations between them
3 - To give an understanding on the material selection and design using material science knowledge
Course Description Introduction to materials science, Mechanical and physical properties of the engineering materials. Classification of atomic structures of the materials. Crystal structures and imperfections. Solid-state diffusion. Phase diagrams and solidification. Ferrous / non-ferrous alloys and heat treatment. Electrical, optical, thermal and magnetic properties associated with electron band structures of the materials. Material modelling.
Course Outcomes 1- Understand the principles of material behaviour under tensile, flexural, compression and shear forces.
2- Understands the physical properties and can correlate the physical properties and material behaviour.
3 - Understand the relations between the chemical composition, atomic bonding and the properties of materials
4- Understand the ordered and disordered crystal structures and the differences between them and define Bravais lattices and Miller indices
5 - Understand the effects of crystal defects on material properties and the test methods for the determination of mechanical properties.
6 - Understand the diffusion concept and laws and its effects on material properties.
7 - Understand the importance of phase concept and phase diagrams, and use them (solid solutions)
8 - Classify ferrous and non-ferrous alloy systems and understand the properties of polymeric and ceramic materials.
9 - Understand the strengthening mechanisms of materials, phase transformations and heat treatments
10- Knows about general material models.
11- Understands the electrical, optical, thermal and magnetic properties of materials associated with electron band structures.
