Course Objectives
1. To provide students with basic knowledge in boron chemistry (1,4)
2. To provide students with information about industrial boron compounds and their uses (1,4)
3. To provide students with information on production principles of boron compounds (1,3,4)
4. To provide students with information about health and enviromental effects of boron compounds (2)
Course Description
Mining and benefication of borate ores. Utilization and economics of boron compounds. Manufacture of boron compounds: Primary products; Borax pentahydrate, Borax decahydrate, Anhydrous borax, Boric acid, Anhydrous boric acid, Sodium perborate. Secondary products; Ammonium pentaborate, sodium octaborate, sodium metaborate, trimethylborate, fluoroborates, zinc borates, boron trifluoride.
Organoboron compounds.
Course Outcomes
1. Demonstrate knowledge on boron processes and their industrial applications (1,2,13)
2. Demonstrate knowledge on properties of boron affecting present and future uses. (1. 2. 9)
3. Search the literature to obtain new developments in boron industry (8,9)
4. Demonstrate an ability to analyze boron processes (1,2,8,13)
