Course Objectives
1. Develop professional skills in the design of chemical processes involving a variety of unit operations(absorption/stripping, distillation, extraction, adsorption, crystallization, chemical conversions, etc)
2. Provide experience in using problem solving methodology in design [define the problem; define existingdata and additional information needed; obtain/measure the needed information; define the techniques to
solve the problem and select the best approach to obtain a good (timely, adequate accuracy, and costeffective) solution]
3. Provide knowledge to select/design/size major equipment common to most chemical processes
4. Provide training and experience in the use of a process simulation software (ChemCAD)
5. Provide training and experience in report writing, oral presentations and teamwork
Course Description
Principles of chemical engineering design. Process flow diagrams. Engineering standards and realistic constraints. Selection, sizing/design of individual chemical process equipment such as pumps, exchangers,
columns, drums, surge tanks. Design of a complete chemical process/product.
Course Outcomes
1. Define an approach to solve process design problems
2. Understand typical steps of process development, construct block/process flow diagrams, and establish material and energy balances of a process
3. Critically review design alternatives
4. Select and size appropriate process equipment
5. Search technical literature to obtain relevant background information and appropriate data for solving design problems
6. Carry out process simulation using ChemCAD
7. Develop an appreciation for process safety, and environmental control issues
8. Work effectively as design team members; prepare effective technical reports and give effective oral presentations
