Course Objectives
1. To teach about materials and their properties.
2. To give knowledge about quality control.
3. To teach material selection criteria and how to protect materials.
Course Description
Introduction to material science. Structures and phase diagrams of metals. Mechanical
properties of metals. Designation and classification of steel, cast iron and nonferrous material.
Heat treatment of metals. Material testing. Ceramics, organic and composite materials.
Corrosion and its protection. International standards of materials.
Course Outcomes
Students who pass the course will be able to;
I. Identify the materials used in ships, their structures and properties.
II. Identify the material types and their selection criteria.
III. Know about heat treatment of metals and material tests.
IV. Have knowledge about international standards of materials.
