Course Objectives
1. To provide the students with information on separation techniques commonly used in chemical engineering. (1-5)
2. To provide information on separation problems encountered in chemical engineering and separation processes used to solve these problems. (1-5)
3. To provide experience in collecting, analyzing, and using data for separation equipment design. (2-6)
4. To show students how to apply mathematics, fundamental science, and engineering knowledge to separation processes and design of separation equipment. (6)
5. To train students to use computers in problem solving. (7)
6. To improve students’ ability to engage in life-long learning. (8)
Course Description
Introduction to separation techniques based on phase equilibria, diffusion and rate processes. Analysis and calculations of separation techniques. Equilibrium stage and countercurrent operations. Calculations of separation equipment based on sedimentation, filtration, distillation, evaporation and extraction.
Course Outcomes
1. Demonstrate knowledge on the principles of chemical engineering separation techniques and use them in problem solving.(1, 2)
2. Carry out design calculations for single- or multiple-effect evaporators. (1-3)
3. Carry out design calculations for batch and continuous distillation units. (1-3)
4. Carry out design calculations for solid-liquid and liquid-liquid extraction. (1-3)
5. Characterize piles of solid particles by experimental and theoretical analysis of particle size and surface area and choose equipment for filtration, sedimentation, and solid-liquid centrifugal separation.(1-3)
6. Use fundamental engineering knowledge and laboratory data to design filtration, sedimentation, evaporation, distillation, and extraction units. (1-3)
7. Use computer, spreadsheet programming and a programming language in problem solving. (6)
8. Reach information to follow the latest development in science and technology. (9)
