Course Objectives After a brief presentation of different models in optics (geometric, wave, electromagnetic and quantum optics), the main components of a fiber optic communication system are described in order to allow the engineers to conduct entirely a fiber optic communication system project.
Course Description This course gives an introduction to the basic principles of optics and photonics. In addition, optical components such as mirrors, prism, lens, gratings, resonators, couplers, optical fibers, lasers, photodetectors etc. which are used in the realization of different parts of an optical communication system (optical transmitter, communication channel and optical receiver) are studied.
Course Outcomes -To know the basic principles of optics and photonics in order to understand the phiycs of optical components and instruments used in an optical communication system.
-To measure and/or characterize the performances of these components
-To apply this knowledge to design an optical communication link
