Course Objectives 1. To teach students the fundamentals of biological systems modeling
2. To introduce students to physiological systems and their mathematical models
3. To inform students about the body's auto-control mechanisms and working principles
4. To give information about closed-loop control systems in medical devices and their designs
5. Informing students about drug modeling and presenting closed-loop drug administration ideas
Course Description Introduction to biological system modeling, physiological complexity, electrical analogues in modeling, model verification and validation, the vestibulo-ocular reflex and modeling of eye movements, hormone physiology and insulin-glucose modeling, Bergman’s minimal model, automatic insulin delivery systems, fundamentals of respiratory physiology, modeling of the mechanics of respiration, gas exchange in alveoli and tissues and acid-base balance in the blood, closed-loop ventilation control, introduction to cardiovascular physiology, modeling of the heart and blood vessels, simple Windkessel model and more complex models, modeling of the cardiovascular control center, control systems in biomedical devices: mechanical ventilators, ECMO devices, anesthesia devices, LVAD devices, artificial heart, modeling of the drug effects, introduction to pharmacokinetics (PK), drug administration, elimination and clearance, compartment models in pharmacokinetics, introduction to pharmacodynamics (PD) models, integrated PK-PD models, automatic drug delivery systems
