EEF 262E - Fundamentals of Electronics

Course Objectives

This course aims to give the following abilities to the students:
1) Conduction mechanism in solid materials,
2) Transistor models and biasing,
3) Calculation methodologies of the gain, input, and output resistances of BJT and MOSFET amplifiers
4) Discussion and analysis of basic analog amplifier stages.

Course Description

Fundamentals of Electronics course covers the structure and operating principles of electronic components.
The first part of the course focuses on the Fundamentals of solid-state physics, properties of semiconductor materials, current carriers, and drift and diffusion mechanisms. The second part of the course focuses on the diode. The structure of the pn-junction diode, diode models used in circuit analysis, diode circuits, and different diode types are covered. The third part of the lecture focuses on transistors. Different transistor types, their behavior, secondary effects, and transistor circuits are covered. Amplification and the gain concept, amplifier types and circuit models, and the conceptual function of the transistor in amplification will be discussed. DC and thermal sensitivity analysis of transistor (BJT, MOSFET) circuits will be shown. Small signal equivalents of BJT and MOSFET, as well as the AC analysis of BJT and MOSFET amplifiers, will be conducted. The gain and input/output resistance of basic amplifier stages will be found, and cascade (direct/capacitively-coupled) amplifiers will be analyzed. The cascode structure, Darlington structure, differential amplifiers, differential and common-mode gains, and common-mode rejection ratio will be explained. Current sources, active-loaded circuits, and the effect of non-idealities on the behavior will be
discussed. Finally, the linear and nonlinear applications of ideal and non-ideal operational amplifiers will be considered.
