Course Objectives
1. To train students to analyze and design control systems for SISO systems.
2. To let students have an idea on the control of two input two output systems.
2. To train students to use tools like polynomial approach and frequency response in the design of control systems.
3. To train students to use relevant computer software in the analysis and design of control systems.
4. To provide practice for developing critical thinking skills and solving open ended problems.
5. To provide experience for students to work in groups and prepare comprehensive reports.
Course Description
Design of low-order compensators (specially variations of PID controllers) using polynomial equations and frequency response approaches, dominant pole assignment technique, constraints and fundamental limitations in SISO control, design by pole zero cancelation, model matching, internal model controller design, control of time-delay systems, decouling, relative gain array and pole assignment methods for two input two output systems
Course Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to
I. Use polynomial equations and/or frequency domain techniques to design a controller by being aware of design specifications,
II. Design phase lag controllers to reduce or eliminate the steady-state error,
III. Design phase lead controller and lead-lag controller to improve transient response,
IV. Design controllers using dominant pole placement technique ,
V. Design controllers using pole-zero cancelation and model matching,
VI. Design internal model controllers,
VII. Design controllers for time delay systems,
VIII. Have an idea on the controller design techniques for multi input multi output systems,
IX. Use software packages such as Mathematica and MATLAB in controller design,
X. Prepare comprehensive reports individually and in groups.
Pre-requisite(s)
KON 313 or KON313E
Required Facilities
Mathematica and/or MATLAB software will be used in the laboratory sessions of the course. Besides, students are expected to use these programs at a great extent in the solution of homework assignments.
