Course Objectives
1. Understanding the concepts required for analyzing baseband and band-pass digital communication techniques and systems.
2. Gaining the ability to design advanced digital communication systems and learn performance analysis methods.
3. Acquiring knowledge of entropy, channel capacity, and channel coding concepts.
Course Description
Introduction. PCM, PCM hierarchy structures, synchronous digital hierarchy, noise analysis in PCM. Binary and multilevel baseband data transmission, intersymbol interference (ISI), Nyquist pulse shaping. Optimum (matched filter, correlator) receivers for the AWGN channel, error performance analysis. Binary and multilevel band-pass data transmission, band-pass digital modulation techniques, amplitude, frequency, and phase shift keying (ASK, FSK, PSK), quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), signal constellation, optimum (matched filter, correlator) receivers for the AWGN channel, error performance analysis. Differential modulation/demodulation. Concepts of information and entropy. Introduction to source coding. Concept of channel capacity, Shannon's theorem. Introduction to channel coding, simple line codes, and block codes.
