Course Objectives The aim of this course is to provide the fundamentals of probability and statistics, and to equip students with the necessary background to apply these concepts in estimation theory and communication systems.
Course Description The topics include: basic probability, axioms and fundamental theorems, conditional probability, Bayes’ rule; random variables and distributions, Binomial, Poisson, and Gaussian distributions; the mean and variance of a probability distribution. Continuous and discrete random variables, joint probability density functions. Descriptive statistics, sampling and estimation, hypotheses and confidence intervals, claims, tests, and conclusions.
Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will acquire the following skills:
I. The ability to calculate the probability of an outcome in a random experiment, including applications of Bayes’ Theorem.
II. The ability to understand fundamental distributions and apply them in advanced statistical analyses.
III. The ability to perform statistical tests and data analyses.
