Course Objectives
I. Provide theoretical and practical knowledge of synchronous and direct-current machines.
II. Provide basic knowledge of applications of these electrical machines in electrical engineering.
III. Gain ability to analyze under different operating conditions.
Course Description
Construction of synchronous machines, excitation fields and their Fourier analysis, two-axis theory of salient-pole machines, reactances, armature reaction in synchronous generators and motors, equivalent circuits, characteristics at no-load and full load condition, phasor diagrams, short-circuit ratio, short-circuit current, synchronization, starting of synchronous motors, active and reactive power regulation, excitation methods, torque equations. Armature reaction, commutation, generator and motor characteristics, speed control and starting methods of DC machines.
Course Outcomes
I. Gain ability to explain fundamental working principles of synchronous and DC machines by using basic electromechanical, electromagnetic and circuit theory.
II. Provide well understanding of construction of synchronous and DC machines.
III. Distinguish different construction techniques and be able to explain the effects of these techniques on expected machine performance.
IV. Learn equivalent circuit models and operating characteristics of synchronous and DC machines, and be able to analyze the power flow between the electrical machines and the power system.
V. Be able to apply methods regarding operation of synchronous and DC machines in practice.
VI. Be able to analyze steady-state behavior of synchronous and DC machines operating under different conditions,
VII. Gain knowledge of establishing necessary experimental setups, and be able to interpret experimental measurements.
