ISL 323E - Operations Research

Course Objectives

This class aims to deliver mathematical modelling and optimisation techniques not only from a theoretical perspective but also from an applied mathematics perspective. In addition to core OR areas (e.g., optimisation techniques and advanced linear algebra, including canonical and linear forms), the course emphasises the mathematical foundations required to understand the theory behind these approaches. Students are therefore expected to have a strong background in advanced mathematics and linear algebra and to draw on knowledge from disciplines closely related to operations research (e.g., calculus, advanced calculus and linear algebra), together with familiarity with application domains (e.g., manufacturing and transportation systems). Teaching will combine lectures with problem-based exercises and computational demonstrations to connect theory to practice. Apart from the basic approaches in linear modelling, by the end of the class students are expected to formulate, analyse, and interpret basic non-linear optimisation models.
