Course Objectives 1) To identify key concepts in microeconomics.
2) To demonstrate how microeconomic models work.
3) To understand how consumers and firms make their decisions and how government intervenes with the
markets.
4) To motivate the use of economic concepts to analyze contemporary issues.
Course Description The course introduces the following economic concepts: scarcity and choice; opportunity costs and trade
offs; markets and prices; supply and demand; productivity; efficiency; competition and market structure;
market failures; role of government; public goods; externalities.
Course Outcomes 1) Competency to use microeconomic concepts such as tradeoff, opportunity cost, and gains from trade.
2) Skill to analyze market forces underlying demand and supply to determine the equilibrium price and
quantity.
3) Competency to explain the rationale for government intervention.
4) Skill to identify various market structures.
5) Skill to develop policies to solve market failures such as imperfect competition and externalities.
