Course Objectives - To provide the basic concepts and principles of strength of materials.
- To give an ability to apply this knowledge of strength of materials on engineering applications and design problems.
- To develop mathematical models for functional analysis and stress calculation of machine elements by using engineering sciences.
- To use the standards and design criteria.
- To improve the goal recognition, creativity and intuition and also to enable students to gain experience in machine design.
Course Description Basic Concepts of Solid Mechanics, Mechanical Properties of Materials, Axial Loading, Shear Stresses and Shear Loading, Bending, Deflection of Beams, Torsion, Buckling of Columns, Criteria for Failure, Combined Loading, Fatique, Fundamentals of Design and Applications of Machine Elements, Welded, Soldered, Adhesive Bonded, Riveted Joints, Shaft-Hub Connections, Bolted Joints and Power Screw Mechanisms, Pins, Knuckles, Springs, Shafts and Axles, Coupling and Clutches, Sliding and Rolling Bearings, Kinematics and Geometry of Gears, Spur, Helical, Bevel, Spiral and Worm Gear Mechanisms, Belt Drive and Chain Mechanisms.
Course Outcomes Students who passed the course will have information about the following subjects.
1. Geometric properties of area elements.
2. Internal forces and moments in structural elements.
3. Two basic types of stresses.
4. Different stress components due to internal forces and moments.
5. Internal forces and deformations in statically indeterminate systems.
6. Optimization of safety and economics for engineering applications.
7. Welded, soldered, adhesive bonded and riveted joints.
8. Shaft-to-hub connections and pin joints.
9. Bolted joints.
10. Application areas of springs and their properties.
11. Axles, shafts and their stress, deformation and vibration characteristics.
12. Types of the couplings and clutches.
13. Sliding, thrust and journal bearings.
14. Spur, helical, bevel, spiral and worm gear mechanisms.
15. Flat and V-belt-pulley, toothed belt mechanisms.
16. Chain mechanisms and chain types.
