Course Objectives To teach to the students of the Maritime Faculty, who will work onboard merchant vessels after their graduation, as ocean-going deck officer, chief officer and master, seamanship knowledge, according to the STCW ‘78 Convention and STCW Code (as amended) and the national legislation for the seafarers, as follow:
1. To teach internal and external factors that affect to ship handling and manoeuvring.
2. To teach different types of ship manoeuvring characteristics.
3. To teach ship handling in emergency for different situation and conditions.
Course Description Water and air resistance on ship handling, Propulsion, Steering, Turning circles and stopping distances, Effect of wind and current on ship handling, Squat, shallow water and similar effects, Proper procedures for anchoring and mooring, Approaching a pilot vessel, Ship handling in restricted waters, Manoeuvring in shallow water, Interaction: bank, canal, ship and tug, Berthing and unberthing, Dry-docking, Ship handling in heavy weather and in ice.
Course Outcomes Students who pass the course will be able to know:
