Course Objectives
1. To provide the basic concepts and principles of strength of materials.
2. To give an ability to calculate stresses and deformations of objects under basic types of loading conditions.
3. To give the ability to apply the knowledge of the strength of materials to engineering applications and design problems.
Course Description
Torsion, Buckling of Columns, States of stress, State of strain, Failure Theories, Combined Loading, Fatigue, Thick-Walled Cylinders and Rotating Discs.
Course Outcomes
Students who pass the course will be able to:
1. Determine the stresses of members under torsion (a, e)
2. Calculate the different stress components due to internal forces and moments (a, e)
3. Determine the stresses under combined loadings (a, e)
4. Determine the principal stresses by using Mohr Circle (a, e)
5. Calculate the deformations under various loading types (a, c, e)
6. Calculate the internal and resulting forces in statically indetermined systems (a, c, e)
7. Optimize the safety and economics for engineering applications (a, c, e)
8. Perform fatigue analysis for systems under dynamic loadings (a, c, e)
