Course Objectives 1. To introduce engineering materials consisting of metals, ceramics, organics and composites and their properties.

2. To introduce the relationships between the structural properties of materials and their mechanical, physical and chemical properties.

3. To emphasize the importance of material selection in design.
Course Description -
Course Outcomes 1. to predict the physical properties of materials by considering their chemical composition and atomic bonding structures
2. to define crystal planes and directions with Bravais and Miller indices
3. to understand structural defects and their effects on the properties of crystalline materials
4. Knowledge and skills related to understanding the mechanical properties of materials and their measurement
5. to define the effect of diffusion on the chemical composition and mechanical properties of crystalline materials and to solve one-dimensional problems
6. to determine the phases, ratios and compositions of crystalline materials using two-component phase diagrams
7. to reason on problems related to the kinetics of phase transformations using the principles of solidification and diffusion in alloy systems
