MAK 223 - Materials Science

Course Objectives

1. To describe the properties of engineering materials such as metals, ceramics, organics and composites.
2. To relate the mechanical, physical and chemical properties of materials with their structure.
3. To emphasize the importance of materials selection im design.

Course Description

To understand the atomic structure of materials and relate them to the macro behavior of materials, crystal defects, mechanisms of diffusion, the basis of fatigue, fracture and creep, tensile behavior of metallic materials, phase diagrams and their calculation, heat treatments, Fe-C system and materials engineering in steels using heat treatments.
