MAK 224E - Engineering Materials
Course Objectives
1. To give students the background required to pursue further studies in materials processing, design and related engineering fields.
2. To develop an understanding of the differences between engineering materials through the application of laboratory experiments to determine their physical and mechanical behavior.
3. To introduce students the failure modes and the use of non-destructive testing techniques of engineering materials.
Course Description
Classification of engineering materials. Iron and steel production. Types and use of steel and cast iron. Heat treatment of metals and alloys. Non-ferrous metals and alloys and their use in engineering applications. Types, properties, principal uses and manufacturing techniques of ceramics, polymers and composite materials. Failure of materials. Non-destructive testing of materials. Materials selection in engineering design.
