Course Objectives
1.To provide the basic concepts and principles of strength of materials.
2.To give an ability to calculate stresses and deformations of objects under external loadings.
3.To give an ability to apply the knowledge of strength of materials on engineering applications and design problems..
Course Description
Basic Concepts. Mechanical Properties of Materials. Axial Loading. Transverse Shear. Bending. Deflection of Beams. Torsion. Buckling of Columns. States of Stress and Strain. Criteria for Failure. Combined Loadings.
Course Outcomes
Student, who passed the course satisfactorily can: (Note: The letter(s) in parentheses addresses the relevant program outcome(s)) 1. Determine the geometric properties of area elements, (a) 2. Calculate the support reactions and internal forces in structural elements, 3. Distinguish two basic types of stresses, 4. Calculate the stresses by using internal forces and moments, 5. Determine the stresses under combined loadings, (e) 6. Determine the principal stresses by using Mohr Circle, (e) 7. Calculate the deformations under various loading types, (e) 8.
