MAK 231 - Thermodynamics I

Course Objectives

1. To teach students the fundamental principles and terminology of energy conversion. 2. To demonstrate the basics of thermal design in engineering systems and develop students' analysis, interpretation, and application skills in this field.

Course Description

Definitions of thermodynamic states and systems. Pure substances and their properties. Phase change. Property diagrams. Equations of state for a perfect gas. The first law of thermodynamics for closed and open systems. Conservation of mass. Steady-flow and time-dependent open systems. The second law of thermodynamics. Heat engines. Refrigerators and heat pumps. Reversible and irreversible processes. Entropy. Exergy.
