Course Objectives
To give detailed information on power transmission systems in road vehicles, i.e.
- Functions of the systems
- Design methodology
- Construction details
Course Description
Actual (general) information on the national and international automotive industry
Road vehicle categories, standards, directives
General information on vehicle sytems design, concepts and methods
General information on the necessity for power transmission in vehicles
Power transmission elements and functions
Clutches
Gearboxes
Axle drive
Shafts, joints
All wheel drive systems
Alternative propulsion systems
Course Outcomes
1. To give detailed information why power tranmission in road vehicles is needed.
2. To give a deep understanding how the power transmission must look like.
3. To give a summary of the function of each sub-component of powertrain systems.
4. To give a wide view of state-of-the-art power transmission techniques and systems.
5. To give the ability to calculate relationships to obtain main powertrain system parameters and characteristics.
6. To give detailed information on automatic control systems in power transmission systems to emphasize the basic need for new functionalities in new vehicles.
7. Alternative propulsion techniques like Hybrid- or Full electric vehicles are introduced.

• 70 % attendance to classes is a requirement to take the final exam.
• Make-up exams shall only be conducted upon the decision of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
• Semester average grades less than 35 get a FF.
• Semester average grades less than 80 cannot get an AA as letter grade.
