Course Objectives
The main aim of the course; to understand origin and evaluation of the different kind of rocks and their physical, chemicaland petrographical features. The main goal of this course is identify and classification of different kind of rocks (mainly magmatic and metamorphic rocks) by using their mineralogical and petrographical properties. Simple tests and practice on the hand sample together with the polarisan microscope studies are also very common methods for identify the different rocks.
Course Description
The course focuses on the description of magma, physical and chemical conditions of the magma, crystallization of magma, emplacement of magma, classification of the magmatic rocks, petrographic features of the different rock suites.
Within the course, an introduction to volcanology is also presented with volcano types, explosion types, mode of occurrence of the pyroclastic rocks, classification of the pyroclastic rocks.
The course also includes the description of metamorphism, its mode of occurence, tectonic environmets that produced metamorphism, metamorphic conditions, kinds of the metamorphism, paragenesis, facies, petrogenetic grid, metamorphic zone concepts, metamorphic textures, kinds of the metamorphic rocks.

Attendant to Optical Mineralogy (JEO 242E) class with minimum note of DD.
