Course Objectives
Fundamental concepts-systems, states, equilibrium, the first, second, and third law of
thermodynamics and applications and roles of these concepts in geologic understanding;
Enthalpy, entropy, and free energy concepts and their usages in paragenetic mineral
assemblages. Thermodynamics of solutions and ore forming medias. Phase equilibria, phase rule
and phase diagrams. Mineral equilibria-equilibrium constant, partial pressure and activity
diagrams, Eh-pH diagrams. Evaluation of thermodynamic data in understandings of petrological
and ore forming process Case studies from home and the World
Course Description
This course is to teach thermodynamics aspects and its applications, which are fundamental steps
for earth sciences
