Course Objectives This course is to teach thermodynamics aspects and its applications, which are fundamental steps for earth science
Course Description Fundamental concepts- state, systems, the zero, first, second, and third law of thermodynamics and applications and roles of these concepts in geologic understanding; Heat, heat transfer ways, enthalpy, entropy, and free energy concepts, mineral stability and their usages in paragenetic mineral assemblages. Thermodynamics of solutions and important geochemical reactions Phase equilibrium, phase rule and phase diagrams. Partial pressure and oxygen fugacity. Geothermobarometer concept in geology. Eh-pH diagrams.
Course Outcomes 1. To understand the relation between Thermodynamic and Earth Science
2. To be able to distinguish between the Laws of Thermodynamics.
3. Understanding global heat sources and their transfer mechanisms
4. Understanding and interpreting Enthalpy, Entropy and Gibbs Free Energy concepts in geochemical reactions
