Course Objectives 1. To teach the basic principles of soil mechanics.
2. To evaluate and classify the soils by physical and mechanical properties.
3. To learn engineering behavior of soils and perform the calculations.
Course Description Earth's crust, occurrence the soil formation, physical properties and classification of soils, water in soils, water flow in soils, soil permeability, soil tension and its distribution, compression and consolidation of soils, the stress-strain behavior of soils and shear strength, bearing capacity and slope stability in soils, field and laboratory tests on soils.
Course Outcomes 1. Learn the formation of soils.
2. Learn the physical and mechanical properties of soils, evaluation and classifications.
3. Classify the soils.
4. Learn compaction of soils.
5. Calculate the soil stresses, shear resistance and settlements.
6. Learn soil permeability, water and behavior.
7. Learn consolidation of soils.
8. Calculate the shear boundary resistance of soils.
9. Learn the field and laboratory experiments of soils.
