Course Objectives 1. to teach the effects of earthquakes on human beings, structures and surface of the earth,
2. to teach the methods of geophysics, geology and seismology for the purpose of identification and solution of problems related to earthquake hazard reduction,
3. to teach the effects of earthquake source and earth’s physical/geological structure on recorded ground motion,
4. to teach how earthquake data are collected, analyzed, interpreted and reported in solving problems related to earthquake hazard and risk,
5. to create an opportunity to use computer software required in data processing and interpretation.
Course Description Effect of earthquakes on humans, buildings and earth’s surface. Concepts of macro- and micro-zonation. Methods used in micro-zonation. Earthquake hazard and risk. Free and forced vibration in systems with single- and multiple-degree of freedom. Ground acceleration, particle velocity and displacement. Relations between earthquake magnitude, acceleration, PGA and duration of shaking. Acceleration, response and design spectra. Effect of earthquake source, velocity structure of the earth and topography on ground motion in terms of acceleration and particle velocity. Estimation of site amplification using earthquake and microtremor data.
