Course Objectives The main objectives of this course are to introduce the student to: (1) basic geological concepts of generation, migration and accumulation of petroleum and natural gas to form economic reserves, and (2) applications of geological concepts and techniques in exploration for and production of petroleum and gas reserves.
Course Description This course covers the basic concepts of the generation of petroleum and natural gas in source rocks, their migration to reservoir rocks and their accumulation in various types of traps in the subsurface. The course also introduces the geological concepts and techniques applied to exploration for and production of petroleum and natural gas.
Course Outcomes Students who satisfy the course requirements will acquire knowledge on the following topics:
I. Basic geology of sedimentary basins that generate oil and natural gas, deposition of source and reservoir rocks and their burial conditions in the basins
II. Processes and conditions of oil and natural gas formation, mechanisms of primary migration from source rocks to reservoir rocks
III. Reservoir rocks and properties: geological processes and factors affecting porosity and permeability of reservoir rocks
IV. Various types of traps for oil and gas accumulation and their geological characteristics, and
V. Geological concepts and techniques in exploration for and production of petroleum and gas reserves.
Pre-requisite(s) Students are highly recommended to pass the General Geology course before taking this course.
