Course Objectives
1.To provide the concepts of functions, limits, continuity, differentiation and integration.
2.To provide the applications of differentiation and integration
3.To give an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics on engineering problems
Course Description
Preliminaries Limits(epsilon-delta definition)and Continuity, Derivatives, Applications of Derivatives, Sketching Graphs of Functions, Asymptotes, Integration(Reimann sum), Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, , Techniques of Integration (Integration by Parts, Partial Fractions, Trigonometric Substitution ,Trigonometric Integrals)Applications of Integrals(area, length of a curve volume and surface area of solids of revolution), Transcendental Functions, Indeterminate Forms, L’Hopital’s Rule,Improper Integrals(First and Second type)
Course Outcomes
A student who completed this course successfully is expected to
I. Compute the limit of various functions, use the concepts of the continuity, use the rules of differentiation to differentiate functions.
II. Set up max/min problems and use differentiation to solve them.
III. Evaluate integrals by using the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus and apply integration to compute areas, surface areas ,volumes and arclength.
IV. Work with transcendental functions and evaluate integrals using techniques of integration.
V. Use L’Hopital’s Rule to calculate limits of single functions and evaluate Improper Integrals
