Course Objectives
1. Introduction to basic concepts of inorganic chemistry and development of inorganic chemical perspective for chemistry 2. Inorganic chemical viewpoint for electronic structure of atom, quantum models, molecular structure, symmetry and bond theories 3. Providing information for crystal types, inter-particle interactions and acid-base theory
Course Description
Electrons in atoms; principles of quantum mechanics, periodic properties of elements, molecular structure, molecular symmetry, covalent bond, valence bond theory, molecular orbital theory, electronegativity, ionic bond, crystal structure of ionic compounds, metallic bond, intermolecular forces, the effects of intermolecular forces, hard-soft acids and bases.
Course Outcomes
Students who successfully completed the course will gain the following abilities: 1. Learning the electronic structure of the atom in detail, 2. Comprehending the periodic table and properties of elements, 3. Interpreting the molecular structure by using molecular shapes, symmetry and bond theories, 4. Application of molecular orbital theory to homo- and heteronuclear compounds, plotting the relevant diagrams, 5. Understanding the effect of inter-particle interactions on the properties of elements, 6. Using and applying the acid-base theories and hard/soft acid-base concepts
