Course Objectives 1. To gain an understanding of the interrelatedness of the diverse economic, political, and sociological factors that have shaped the modern history of Turkey. 2. To develop a critical perspective on the major sociological and historical forces at work in the Turkish modernization experience. 3. To familiarize students with the reading of historical source texts.
Course Description The course offers students a unique pathway to explore and gain the tools necessary to understand the historical evolution of the modern Turkish Republic. The different historical phases that the Republic evolved through are the subject matter of the course. Throughout the course one-dimensional narratives will be critically scrutinized, and multi-focal perspectives be advanced.
Course Outcomes Students who pass the course will be able to 1. gain a basic understanding of the complex dynamics at work in the formative period of modern Turkey from the late Ottoman Empire to the early Turkish Republic, 2. develop the ability to identify and articulate in a critical way, both orally and in writing, the complex dynamics that mark the Turkish experience of modernization, 3. develop a critical perspective on the interrelatedness of history, historiography, and politics.
