ITB 226E - Philosophy of Art

Course Objectives

To acquaint students with major approaches that have significantly determined the way art is understood.
To obtain substantial understanding of the nature of art and its objects .
To identify bases of aesthetic experience and attitudes
To be able to analyze and evaluate works of art
To develop skills in critical reading, thinking and writing

Course Description

This course is an introduction to major arguments in the philosophy of art. The course will involve the close reading of passages from primary philosophical texts. It will focus major philosophical arguments to analyzed will include key ideas of philosophers whose thought embodies the initial attempts to understand the “necessary conditions” of art.
