Course Objectives
• Emphasizing the importance of mathematical representation to explain space
dimensions and relations of spatial objects.
• Defining mathematical methods for managing spatial objects and basic geometrical
behaviors of entities.
• In this case, main GIS functions in the computer environment are provided with
mathematical background.
Course Description
Introduction to space geometry. Logic. Vector algebra. Main coordinate systems and transformations. Projection systems. Relations, functions, and linear models. Matrix algebra.
Venn diagrams. Boolean algebra and operations. Topology. The graph theory, paths, cycles, connectivity. Topological views. Flows in networks. Map algebra. Raster-based
calculations.
Course Outcomes
M.Sc. students who successfully pass this course gain knowledge, skill, and competency in the
following subjects;
i. Developing and intensifying knowledge in the related program’s area, based upon the
competency at the undergraduate level
ii. Grasping the inter-disciplinary interaction related to one’s area
iii. The ability to use the expert-level theoretical and practical knowledge acquired in the area
iv. Interpreting and forming new types of knowledge by combining the knowledge from the
area and the knowledge from various other disciplines
v. Solving the problems faced in the area by making use of the research methods
vi. Paying regard to social, scientific, cultural, and ethical values during the collecting,
interpreting, practicing, and announcing processes of the area-related data and the ability
to teach these values to others
