GIT 504E - Advanced GIS

Course Objectives

Geographic information science (GIScience] includes the existing technologies and research areas of geographic information systems (GIS], and quantitative spatial analysis. GIScience therefore addresses fundamental issues in the use of digital technology to handle geographic information; namely, information about places, activities, and phenomena on and near the surface of the Earth that are stored in maps or images. The use of GIScience technologies has become pervasive throughout, natural resource management, government, industry, and business. Therefore, this course shoul deal with advance topics of GIS rather then basic aspects.

Course Description

Current status of geographic information systems analysis and design requirements for the
system. Technical, organizational and institutional needs for the development GIS strategy and policies. Project management, the definition of implementation area, and technical preferences for working platforms in GIS. To design and development of data structures and standards. The cost aspects of GIS and financial considerations. GIS processing steps, personnel and work periods. The main approaches to database design. Organizations and preferred methods of software and hardware in GIS.
