Course Objectives
1) Information theoretic concepts regarding data compression, the notion of entropy
2) Entropy coding techniques
3) Several modeling approaches for compression
4) Compressed data structures and applications
5) Compression as a data classification method
Course Description
Basic information theory concepts to measure the entropy of a sequence, universal codes, entropy coding with Huffman and arithmetic codes, compression algorithms with dictionary-, statistics-, or transformation-based modeling methods, compressed data structures and regarding applications, compressed self-text indexing, using compression as a classifier
Course Outcomes
Students who pass the course knows:
1) Entropy and basic information theory concepts regarding lossless compression
2) Universal codes: Iinteger coding with variable-length codes
3) Achieving optimal entropy coding with Huffman and arithmetic codes
4) Dictionary based models for compression
5) Statistical models for compression
6) Compression with the Burrows-Wheeler Transform
7) Fundamental compressed data structures and related applications
8) How compression helps in data classification
