Course Objectives To provide an overview of how engineers assess seismic hazard to life, economy and buildings;
Provide understanding of the technical calculation of seismic hazard;
Deliver an understanding of the uncertainties involved in seismic hazard analysis
Course Description This course covers the fundamental components of seismic hazard assessment from the estimation of probable earthquake ground shaking in an area, ways to assess building types and their vulnerability to the consequent building damage, human casualties and economic losses.
Course Outcomes Understand the underlying principles, appreciate the limitations and be able to critically evaluate conventional and new unconventional techniques for the seismic hazard assessment and the ?seismic assessment of civil engineering structures;
