Course Objectives
1 The evaluation of the theories on Urban Design in the 19th and 20th centuries.
2 The evaluation of the practices on Urban Design in the 19th and 20th centuries.
3 Evaluation of contemporary approaches in urban design
Course Description
Evaluation of contemporary theories and practices of Urban Design. Approaches in 1950s and 1960s. Kevin Lynch and Gordon Cullen. Complexity and diversity: Jane Jacobs, Richard Sennet. Metabolists approach: Maki, Debate on methodological approach. Morphological approach: Stanford Anderson. Underrated architecture: Christopher Alexander and others. Modern, late modern and post modern approach to urban space, New urbanism movement, smart cities, slow cities. Changing issues in urban design in different countries.
Course Outcomes
1 to understand interactions between urban planning, urban design and landscape architecture
2 To understand the relations between urban design, planning and management issues in the conservation implementation studies.
3 To be able to contribute the solutions of spatial, social, cultural and economic problems.
4 To understand relations between theory and practice in urban design issues
Pre-requisite(s)
Students will prepare a term paper individually or as a group of two. Each student or a group will search on evaluation of selected subject or case studies. Papers will be presented in the seminars and will be discussed. Term papers are required to hand over at the end of the term.
