Course Objectives 1) Introducing the repair and strengthening principles of damaged structures under earthquake loads.
2) To introduce strengthening methods for damaged structures due to inconvenient structural system selection, insufficient material properties or design and application mistakes in structures.
3) Developing alternative strengthening solutions having minimum effects on architectural functions of damaged buildings.
Course Description Damage types of masonry and reinforced concrete structures. Determination and evaluation of damages after earthquakes. Preparation of damage forms of structures. Repair and strengthening methods. Buildings with insufficient structural systems according to the new Turkish Seismic Code and repair and strengthening of damaged structures. Repair and strengthening of walls, columns, retaining walls, beams, column-beam joints, slabs and foundations. Strengthening of structures with new members. Evaluation of the behavior of existing structures under earthquake loads. Structural behavior evaluation procedures. Determination and analysis of structural system. Introduction to approximate calculation methods. Developing alternative strengthening solutions having minimum effects on architectural functions of damaged buildings. Examples of repair and strengthening applications performed after past earthquakes and study of these examples.
Course Outcomes Graduate students who successfully pass this course gain the following knowledge, skills and proficiencies:
1. To understand the behavior of structures under earthquakes.
2. The ability to evaluation of damage types of structure under earthquakes.
