Course Objectives
1. To introduce the field of cognitive science and situate the area of design cognition in it
2. To introduce the various methods of research in cognitive science with a particular focus on the protocol analysis method which has been frequently adapted in design cognition research
3. To introduce the various subjects/concepts from cognitive science that the students need to establish an understanding about as a basis for understanding the design cognition research to be discussed in the class
4. To introduce the prominent areas and issues of research in design cognition and to discuss the findings of previous research
Course Description
This course is designed to introduce the students to the prominent theories, concepts, and research in design cognition with the aim towards facilitating students' conducting research on and developing an in-depth understanding about the design thinking processes of architects/designers.
Course Outcomes
The graduate students who successfully complete this course will
1. Get acquainted with the research areas in cognitive science
2. Acquire knowledge about the various methods that they can adapt or built on for studying cognition
3. Establish an in-depth understanding about the prominent issues of research in design cognition
4. Learn about and reflect on the various theories on the nature of the design activity- how designers think, how they develop designs
5. Be able to identify gaps in design cognition research, develop new ideas and/or methods
6. Improve their analytical reading, research and writing skills
